Film Industry

"Aftershock," a movie about the devastating Tangshan earthquake in 1976, grossed over 34 million yuan (5 million U.S. dollars) at the Chinese box office on its debut Thursday. "Aftershock" is about a mother's three-decade journey to an emotional reunion with the daughter she thought she had lost in the earthquake.

Instructions:

1) Just like the Chinese movie industry in China, do you think Singapore's movie industry has a bright future? How well do you know about our local film productions? what are your favourites?

2) What else can our local movie industry do in order to reach out to international audience?

  1. 1) I always love watching films. Language is not a barrier for me. I do follow our local film industry. Singapore has a future in the movie industry business. There are many media-related courses and schools in Singapore to groom such talents. I have read news that Singapore youth are winning prestigious awards in film festivals.

One example is "Sandcastle", a movie that revolves around 18-year-old En (played by Joshua Tan), who is forced to live with his grandparents while awaiting enlistment into the army, when his mother takes a long holiday. The film directed by short-film director Boo Junfeng's makes its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, will be the first local film to feature at the 49th International Critic's Week.

My favourite local film is 'I NOT STUPID'. The film connected with every singaporean. Since it had english subtitles, everyone could enjoy the movie. It was a touching and emotional tale that didn't fail to bring tears to one's eyes.

    2) everyone should learn to appreciate art and films. Thus, schools can conduct enrichment programmes and workshops on film making. some hands-on practice would motivate students to appreciate films and film-making. On a higher level, local film industry can shoot their films in other countries such as UK and US to reach the international audience.

    1) As Singapore is a small country, the film industry has to be marketable to other Asian markets like Hong Kong , Malaysia and perhaps in China in order to survive and compete with other countries.

Budgets, is another factor that hinder Singapore potential. We do not see many action-packed full of fast cars and explosions kinds movies like other countries . However,we do have family affairs story produced instead.

My favorites local movies are "Home run" and "I Not Stupid".
The first movie focuses about the lives of two siblings. The elder brother lost his sister only pair of school shoes. Both children do not tell theirs parents as they do not want to add burden to their unemployed father and pregnant mother. They have decided to share the shoes among themselves . The sister- Seow Fang would wears the shoes to school in the morning before dashing home to pass to her brother- Ah Kun the shoes for his afternoon session.

It was a touching movie and I find that I am fortunate to have 2 extra pairs of school shoes in my shoes cabinet not like the two children.

Megan Zhang the actor as Seow Fang has won an award for best new performer at Taiwan 40th Golden Horse Awards in 2003

Another Movie that I like "I Not Stupid". The story was about EM3 students where people thinks that they are the students who are useless and hopeless who could not studies. They do have any future. I strongly believe that individual has their own strength and weakness.
This story proven the misconception of people's thinking.

Jack Neo the director has become popular to the government. In 2004 he became the first local filmmaker honoured with a National Day Award.

    2) In order to reach international audience, there are many rooms for improvement.
I would suggest media corp could invite foreigner to teach us on film making program mes. Special Schools could conduct workshops for talented people and train them in their potential.

1)Just like the Chinese Movie Industry in China,i do not think that Singapore's Movie Industry would have a bright future.Singapore lack creativity and most of the movie ideas was obtain by other Movies in other Countrys.

I do not really know anything about our local film production. All i know about is maybe Mediacorp and nothing else.I do not have any favourite Movies or Television Shows because nothing really captures my intrest.Although i do not have any favourites Movies or Television Shows,i have some DVD shows or maybe Television shows that i like but they are not from Singapore local film production company but instead,it is from Hong Kong film production company.

One of the Shows that i like is 'Glittering Days'.It's a touching story that will make you laugh and cry.I would surely recomment anyone of any age or any gender to watch this show as it is worth it.This show is about a famous Singer who was betry by his own little brother because his little brother was jealous of him and at the same time, greedy. After many events and bad things happening, the Singer finally get to clear his name of begin a bad person to becoming back to a Famous Singer and he even get to be with the girl he love.It is also a story of teaching us not to lie because one single lie,it can cause a famous Singer to become a coolie worker.

Another Show that i like would be 'Ten Brothers'.It's really a very meaningful show and i also really recomment many people to watch this show. It's also a touching show that would make you laugh and cry. This show is about the Ten Brothers that are born with special talents and funny looks. This is a show that teaches us to respect people, cherish family and many other things.

There are still many other Good and original shows in Hong Kong.Of course, there are also good and original shows in Singapore that cannot be found in Hong Kong or any other country but that would be very rare.

2)If our local movie industry want to reach international audience,Singapore would have to make quite alot of changes.Singapore would have to be more original. An example, last year i saw a Tv show in Singapore which is created by our local film industry,it is really completely the same to one of the show in Malaysia. It was really completely the same other than the places, sentence they say and actor but the storyline was completely the same and after seeing that,i was completely dissapointed with our local film industry.Singapore should stop copying other countrys idea but instead Singapore should create their own type of movie which is unique to other country and this movie can only be found in Singapore and not in any other country. Those are what i think about how Singapore should change.

  6. I watch movies a lot , as much as twice weekly , and there's always trailers before the movie starts . This is how I know about other films and if the trailer looks interesting , I'll definately catch it with my friends . There are many commercials on buses and bus stops as well .
I strongly believe that Singapore films will have a bright future as well . For one , we do have many creative directors like Jack Neo . Not only that , many of our local films are watched in other countries other than Singapore .
The reason why I don't watch Hongkong or China tv shows/movies a lot is that the subtitle during the shows are usually chinese and I won't understand what they're talking about because I'm not good at chinese . Although I dislike and am not good Chinese language , I enjoy watching Chinese movies as well and my favourites are usually Jack Neo's .
Here are some of my favourites .
I really enjoyed the movie I Not Stupud & I Not Stupid Too as it depicts the life of typical Singaporean children . I Not Stupid was about the comparison students from EM1 & EM3 . Personally , I can relate to this movie as there really was this kind of fierce competition going on during my primary school days .
I Not Stupid Too talks about teenagers' life in Singapore - how work is over studies & how parents place studying above everything else , even the kids' feelings . The movie made me cry and I thought it was really great , especially how Shawn Lee (acting as Tom) and Joshua Ang (acting as Chengcai) expressed their feelings . This film has went overseas and many liked that movie as well .
However , I still think that there's room for improvement for some movies like Love Matters , which was a comedy with a Christian theme .Personally , I think that the movie was too predictable and it wasn't really THAT funny .
having said all these , I believe that as long as we believe in our film industry , one day we'll suceeed .

  7. 1) in my opinion, I feel that Singapore's film industry are hood but there are still room for improvements. Singapore's films industry should come out with movies that relate to us Singaporean so that we would move with flow of that particular movie. Singapore's films industry would make a tonne of money just by making a movie that everyone in singapore enjoys! That should come out with movies related to us Singaporean's such as 'I'm not stupid' , 'money no enough' and etc. This movies are Jack Neo's films. They are of good influence and they show part and parcels of life in Singapore. I believe the language does not matter as the movies are supported with English subtitles.

    2) local movie industries are tryingctheir best tocshow inspirational movies so that people would follow. This is to influence teenagers like us to know what is right and what is wrong. I personally feel that local movie industry should show more of importance of respecting other people's races and to respect each other's culture and religion. This would help stop racism in Singapore!

  9. @siwen: great effort!:)

@ regine: I agree with your statement too- believe in our local production and they can make us proud one day! SUPPORT THEM!!

@haslam: about the grammatical errors...that's alrite haslam. But just be careful about the grammar part when you produce a written work in class or exam:)) Yes as you said, the good influence should bring about a positive impact on the society!:)

  10. 1)I think that Singapore's Movies are great, but some movies has almost the same story line as the others, which are common. Singapore's movie industry might have a bright future, who knows, cause they are getting more creative each year.
The only local film production I know is Jack Neo's. His film are great, it reflects on our daily life and what we are feeling in Singapore.
I have many favourites film. Some from other countries' and some from Singapore. One of them is " I NOT STUPID" & "I NOT STUPID TOO", this film show hows teenager feels about school, life and their family. It really show what most teenagers feel so, therefore most teenagers love it. Another film is " MONEY NO ENOUGH" & "MONEY NO ENOUGH 2", this film shows how some people are unable to cope with life cause there isn't much many money for them. In one part of the movie, it shows how ERP felt to most of the Singaporeans, it's just a "money-sucking" machine. But without government "taking" money from us, Singapore wouldn't be like now. So I guess, Singaporeans should appreciate what the Government do for us. Last but not the least, my most favourite film in Singapore is "Where Got Ghost", it also reflects on how humans life is. Like what would someone feel when they "met" into a Ghost, and their beliefs in such stuff. All of Jack Neo's film are reflecting on our life, that's why I like most of his film. :)

    2) Singapore can hired some famous director from other countries to teach Singapore's director for a better film. And Singapore should make the movies more "3D" with the "feel" in it to make it better. These are some of what our local movie industry can do in order to reach out to the international audience.

  12. I think Singapore will do quite well in the movie industry,in fact. Now,even if it is a chinese film, non-chinese will also try to make the effort to read the sub-titles in order to watch the film. Many Singaporeans like films like 'I'm not stupid', 'Men in White', so on and so forth..My Favourite films are mainly by Jack Neo.

I think schools ,whether primary or secondary, should have a film day every 2 weeks. This is to allow students as well as taechers to enjoy and appreciate films once in a while, to relax themselves from the stress caused by their workload in school.
